BHHS is always proud of our students; for their academic performance, for their athletic contributions, for hard work, dedication, and more. We are especially proud when they are recognized as good citizens. We would like to share what was written of two of our own, Kyler Softly and friend, Garrett Oxford. To the parents of Kyler Softley, you have raised an amazing human being. I have a lifted truck with 35inch tires and came out of the Dr's office today uptown to my tire being completely flat. Upset on the phone telling my husband what was going on, Kyler pulled up next to me to see if he could help. Him and his friend went above and beyond just being a good citizen to patch my tire, Air it up, and then get it back on the truck and he even followed me to short stop to make sure it held air to get back to Staunton. Your son did not have to stop, let alone offer for me to try and borrow his spare to make it home, or pull mine off, patch it and air it up, and then get me back on my way. I tried to offer to venmo him some kind of money for his time because I didn't have cash but he said he didn't have venmo. Please let me know how I can pay your son back for his kindness because not all people would have stopped and for a teenage boy to spend 45 minutes helping a stranger, definitely made me feel grateful and hopeful for the next generation. Please tell your son I said thank you again. He was 100% my savior today to get me and my vehicle back on the road.

Makenna Wilkinson, a member of the BHHS Class of 2022, received a full tuition scholarship to play volleyball at Metropolitan Community College in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Coach Robert Kaleikau drove to BHHS today for her signing and many of her past coaches came out to support her as well. Makenna plans to work towards a business degree and hopes to either start her own small business or work in marketing. She is looking forward to continuing her volleyball career under the guidance of "Coach K."

The annual Lewis and Clark Community College Trebuchet contest, now in its 15th year, is a modern, nonviolent and educational application of this medieval device - The Trebuchet. Teams of four to five high school students representing school districts in the L&C district plan, design, build and test trebuchets, under the guidance of a teacher or coach who serves as the sponsor for the team. The contest is a great opportunity for students to apply lessons learned in physics and math to a hands-on application. In addition, the event fosters team building, exploration, and problem solving. These are critical skills for those interested in pursuing jobs in an engineering field. Representing Bunker Hill High School this year were two teams from Mr. Goltz’s physics class. The teams were Team AVC (Daniel Manar, Grant Burch, Isaac Steward, Drake Scroggins) and The Bunker Hillbillies (Kimberly Moore, Nathaniel Winchester, and Austin Eddinger). The teams compete by shooting rubber balls at the opposing teams bucket located in front of their trebuchet. Whichever team can make the most amount of shots in the other team’s bucket after 5 minutes wins the match. Bunker Hillbillies won 2 rounds with kill shots meaning they completely knocked out the other teams trebuchet and ended the contest. They also earned two victories in a sudden death shootout. Team AVC won one of their matches in sudden death. Overall the Bunker Hillbillies won 5 matches and lost 3. Team AVC won 8 matches and lost 2 earning them a trip to the championship round versus Edwardsville high school. AVC won the match making this the first trebuchet championship for BHHS since entering the contest many years ago. Great job to both teams!

Mr. Banwart's US Honors History class held a mock trial last week. The trial helped students understand the fears many Americans had in the early days of the Cold War of espionage and Soviet nuclear capabilities. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, two of the defendants in this case, were accused of selling secrets to the Soviets. Mrs. Eschbach's class, which served as the jury, rendered a vote of "not guilty". In the real case, Julius and Ethel both were convicted and received the death penalty.
