grad message

After much consideration, and after extensive consultation with the Senior Class of 2020 and the Macoupin County Public Health Department, Bunker Hill CUSD #8 has decided to postpone graduation ceremonies scheduled for next month.  This was not a decision made either lightly, or in isolation.  Due to the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-31, which extended the “stay-at-home” order until the end of May except for essential business, it would be impossible for our school district to provide our students with the traditional ceremonies they deserve, while still ensuring the safety of all in attendance.

Here are some tentative dates for our “traditional” in-person ceremonies in order to begin planning.  Please realize that these dates may change due to circumstances beyond the school district’s control regarding social distancing mandates.  However, if all goes well and these restrictions are lifted, the following dates will be utilized:

Thursday, August 6 = 8th Promotion at 7:00 PM

Friday, August 7t= BHHS Graduation at 7:00 PM

Saturday, August 8 = BHHS Senior Prom

If for some reason, social distancing prohibits us from having these ceremonies in August, we have 3 backup dates (October, December and May 2021) on the books.  Rest assured, we are very proud of our graduates and are committed to providing them with the honor and ceremonies they deserve while at the same time looking after the safety and well-being of our students, families and faculty/staff as well as the Bunker Hill community at large.

However, a specially created slideshow honoring the Senior Class of 2020 will be livestreamed on our school Facebook page at 7:00 PM on Friday, May 15th to honor our graduates.  This is NOT meant to replace the traditional ceremony, but simply meant to honor what should have been a very special date and time.

This decision was a difficult one to make, and it breaks my heart for our graduating class.  However, we just cannot take any chances when it comes to protecting the health and safety of our students.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and thank you for your continued patience and partnership as we navigate this trying time together!

Respectfully yours,

Todd Dugan
